ON REACHING THREE SCORE
AND TEN
(With apologies to W.S. Landor)
I strove with none, for none was worth my strife
Nature I loved and, next to Nature, Science
I warm'd both hands before the fire of life
It sinks, so why complain in sad defiance?
The answers to life's riddles long I sought
To find them one by one, or twinned as pair
So paradox demanded deeper thought
And led me wond'ring up a spiral stair
The view revealed the nearest and the far
The darkest depth, the fires and peaks sublime
A space that can retain the furthest star
By wielding in its grasp the lens of time
When long ago I started on this quest
I planned the great discoveries to share
So to afford humanity some rest
From awful woes and pain too hard to bear
But even as I reached that point of view
From which to tell the tale, I understood
That all I had to say of what is true
Was said; of repetition, what the good?
A wisdom learned cannot by words alone
Be passed, nor truth by lecturing explained
Else human life could meaningless be shown,
All knowledge in a single heart contained.
It is for generations as they rise
To reach conclusions of their own free will
For each to see the world with freshen'd eyes
Epiphany to touch or dream fulfill.
How wonderful it is when then we find
That for some children scarce a word is needed
Nor guidance more than watchful love, not blind
Ensure the halls of history are heeded.
